Pagham Beach House is a residential reconstruction project, of a train carriage house on Pagham Beach. Located near Pagham Harbour the existing house has a unique selling point - the two original train carriages that form a large portion of the house remain in situ and are in good quality. The brief for the project is to bring the house up to a sustainable level and give it a new lease of life.
It is thought that around 1918, a policy decision was made by the London Brighton & South Coast Railway to replace many of its existing rolling stock to such an extent Chichester, Bognor Regis and Brighton saw their yards filled with redundant wooden-bodied Victorian carriages. While some of the carriages were used as holiday homes and also by railway staff, there was mounting pressure on the railway company to utilise their yards more effectively. It decided to either break down the carriages or sell them to the general public. Many of them were bought for £10 to £50 each. The transportation of these carriages from the railway to Pagham would have been on trailers pulled by horses.
A planning application approved in March 2023 for the reconstruction of the house, with a new arrangement of the carriages which took better advantage of the narrow site. We have proposed a low level single storey home with black cladding, efficient use of space, and a bold roof window which captures afternoon light.
