Paul Cashin Architects 'PCA' is a creative architectural practice based in Winchester, Hampshire. PCA takes a design-led approach to the practice of contemporary architecture, believing that well thought and considered design is essential to the creation of successful architectural space.

The practice undertakes contemporary architectural design projects across residential, commercial and civic sectors of the construction industry. Currently having a number of live projects across Winchester, Hampshire and the South Coast including one-off new build houses, extensions and commercial business projects.

As a small practice, our strength lies in our inclusive and personal approach, working directly with clients, consultants, and contractors, encouraging the cross over between architecture and other areas of art and design.

We are in a consistent state of process, working through a range of media including physical and computer models, hand and computer drawings, sketching and conceptual diagrams, discussions and presentations.

Paul Cashin Architects - Update on Construction Progress - Herdsman's Cottage Starts on Site

Herdsman’s Cottage Starts on Site

Herdsman’s Cottage is a contemporary new build dwelling replacing an existing house of the same name within the Hampshire countryside in the village of Upham, near Winchester.

The proposal replaces the existing cottage and associated outbuildings that had fallen into a state of disrepair.

The site is flanked by a road to one side and sits as part of a small development of other dwellings and outbuildings, many of which are re-utilised from their formerly agricultural origins. The wider surroundings include open views across neighbouring fields and the countryside of the South Downs NP.

The form of the design is a composition of two flat roof elements. The largest being a linear, single storey form that incorporates arrival, service and living spaces, whilst the second, two-storey element, forms the bedroom spaces.

The new house will be contemporary in appearance, bringing forth impressions of modernist/neo-modernist aesthetics. The dominant exterior material is red brick, complemented by aluminium panel accents with large feature expanses of aluminium-framed glazing surrounds. Inside, bespoke joinery and consideration of fixture details will create a high level of finish.

Although the design of the new house has a contemporary architecture aesthetic, carefully considered details relate to the agricultural surroundings. The 'sussex-bond' brickwork relates to nearby barn structures and the framing of certain countryside views helps to root the house into place.

The project has now started on site. Demolition of the existing buildings has finished, setting out for the new building has been completed, the ground has been levelled and excavated and the foundations will be poured over the coming weeks.
