Paul Cashin Architects Starts Work On a New Bistro project in Devon
We have been recently invited to work on the contemporary renovation of a beach side cafe and shop, on Broadsands Beach in Devon. The project, sited just outside Paignton in Devon, will focus on the opportunity to renovate an existing 1980s cafe take away, shop, and beach front area, as part of a strategy to develop the site into a year round destination.
Upon recently visiting the site and experiencing the beach during both populated and empty periods, our initial ideas will draw upon lighthouse typologies, with particular reference to the historical use of beacons. By using examples of the Danish coastlines around Sakgen, our concept will start with the Bascular Light, or Vippefyr; a simple structure of a timber beam and counter weight to lift a ‘basket of light’ up into the night sky. We imagine the new destination building will draw people from afar using light as guide towards the beach, then entice visitors inside with flickering light through openings and slot windows.
Concept drawings and models will be worked up over the next few weeks as we move towards presenting the strategy to the client, and then the local authorities towards the end of the year. Construction work is scheduled for next summer and will be phased so to allow the business to operate and serve the beach during the building process.
