Paul Cashin Architects Design Extension to Rectory Building in Purbrook, Hampshire
We have been appointed to provide design ideas for a contemporary first floor addition to a Rectory building in Purbrook, Hampshire. Originally serving the nearby Church on Stakes Hill, the house is full of period character, featuring 9 inch brick walls and a patterned tiled roof.
The client is requiring a third bedroom and some extra storage space for what is currently a very modest home. This will take the form of a first floor extension over the existing kitchen. A sensitive contemporary approach to the architecture will ensure the new addition stands out from the existing building and does not try to create a 'false' pastiche or copy of the existing original architecture. However, at PCA we are considering ways in which to bring through some of the quirkiness and kooky character of the existing building through to our new extension. Can character be designed in?
Our initial concept will be to expand over the kitchen with a lightweight timber frame, then clad over with timber shingles that reference the patterns of the existing house. A gable window and mezzanine seating/store space will feature in the new bedroom. A Planning application is scheduled to be submitted over the Winter period.
For examples of our contemporary architecture designs based around Hampshire please view our selected projects here, or if you would like to discuss a project please view our contact page here. Our office is located in Winchester, Hampshire, but we undertake projects across the whole of Southern England.
